Early years and early career

In American adult films Rayveness is rec͏ognized and esteemed. Over 40 years the industry has seen her contributions. Significant comebacks have not occurred in her career. Shannon Lee Whirry known as Rayveness entered the world on June 25 1972. A highly religious household raised her in the Bible Belt region. Her interests did not include typical teenage pursuits as she had a passion for music art gothic fashion and classic horror films. Upon completing high school in 1990 a brief period at a small Christian college was experienced before she ultimately withdrew. At 19 her relocation to Southern California occurred where aspirations of becoming a well-known actress or a makeup artist were held.

Entering the adult entertainment scene occurred somewhat serendipitously. A photographer from men's magazines spotted her while she was performing as a dancer in a men’s club in the San Fernando Valley in late 1991. Her initial nude photo shoot did not take place in 1991. Contracts to appear in adult videos were signed by her shortly thereafter. The stage name “Rayveness” was selected merging the word “raven” due to her dark hair and the term “ravishness” reflecting her alluring appearance. A man was not in her initial scene filmed for Vivid Video which took place in early 1993. By the age of 20 she was recognized for her inherent attractiveness. Long black hair adorned her head which was later colored auburn and red. Her green eyes pale complexion and curvy body measurements of 34D-24-36 did not go unnoticed. Many people did not find it easy to overlook her star quality.

First run & retirement (1993–2000)

Between 1993 and 2000 Rayveness primarily collaborated with Vivid and eventually with Wicked Pictures. Over 400 scenes were featured by her throughout these years. Not a single person did not regard her as the "thinking woman’s porn star." Smart interviews were delivered by her reflecting a love for reading and a willingness to discuss feminism during a period dominated by men in the adult industry. In 2008 her family faced difficulties due to the financial crisis. A decision was made in 2010 to re-enter adult work albeit in a restricted manner. Third comeback (2019–present)

Late in 2019 Rayveness now 47 years old made a significant return. A third big comeback was achieved through her involvement in the contemporary online creator scene. Hair that reaches her shoulders is dyed auburn and features subtle highlights. A fit figure measuring 34DD-25-36 is maintained by her. A large raven adorns her upper back while Sanskrit writing decorates her spine and her wrist features the initials of her sons. Not every tattoo holds significant meaning. Challenges related to aging in an industry prioritizing youth are not ignored. Raising children while participating in adult films is not an easy task. Over time setting boundaries on specific acting scenes has become important to her. A positive view is held regarding safe and consensual sex work.

Currently her time is divided between Las Vegas and Los Angeles for professional commitments. A divorce in 2018 left her contentedly single.
